| The English Channel comprised the ICES areras VIIe and VIId which are more or less a part of the North Sea area as delimitated by Ascobans. Two studies (Pingiroise and FilManCet) were conduced in that area. Filmancet study comprises two different areas: North Brittany and Nord Pas de Calais (Figure 1). The main objectives are to quantify accidental catches of marine mammals in set nets and identify solutions to limit them. | The scientific cruise Observhal96 took place in August 4-27, 1996 with the underwater system for exploration and intervention « Cyana » and the support vessel « Suroît ». The goal of this IFREMER first use of a man opereted submersible for a fisheries study was to observe fishes and invertebrates in their environment, as well as fishing gears in operation. All the dives, 2 to 5 hours long, took place off Brittany in Atlantic. Five were shalower than 100 meters, nine between 100 and 200 meters, one at 400 meters and for deeper than 1000 meters. | The objective of the project is firstly, to assess the fuel consumption for the fishing technique of Danish seine including assessing its distribution in each phase of its implementation and secondly, investigate potential improvements in energy consumption. Sensors on the boat and on the gear have been installed. Measurements were carried out during sea trials. The boat and gear were simulated. From these measurements and simulations, we observe that the route and fishing phase have more or less te same consumption (58% and 42%). | The fishery for common sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is the fourth most important French metropolitan fishery in value terms, with approximately 5 500 tons landed, and a total turnover of about 52 million euro in 2006. Given its high market value, sea bass is targeted by a range of métiers, resulting in interactions between a large number of fleets. The annual contributions to catches and landings of each of these fleets are highly variable, as are their level of economic dependence towards the species. Sea bass is also an emblematic species for recreational fishermen. | An acoustic repellent was developed by Ixtrawl and Ifremer to mitigate incidental catches of common dolphins in trawl fisheries. The system developed-which bears the name of CETASAVER-was developed after behavioural tests performed on groups of common dolphins. These tests conducted at sea for the European project Necessity showed that the trajectories of animals could be changed by this pinger. The CETASAVER emits a beam directing conical with an opening between 75 and 15 degrees. This allows directional less disturbing environmental noise and must be directed towards the opening of the trawl and the frequency ranges from 30 to 150 kHz. The signals are modulated and pulsed. | Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. | In crustaceans, size at first maturity is often determined by secondary sexual characters. The present work tries to determine the size at first maturity in Nephrops norvegicus from South-Brittany area with the development of some secondary sexual characters. We study a qualitative character - the presence or absence of ovigerous setae in females and biométrie characteristics - the width of the second abdominal segment in females, the length of the propod at the first pereiopod in males and females - The study of the relative growth of the propod length shows that males may reach sexual maturity at 19mm carapace length. | The average length at which female Nephrops norvegicus attain their first maturity was determined during 1977 and 1978 by following the presence of spermatophores and development of the ovaries. During 1978, females were sexually mature at the age of 2 but in 1977 they did not mature before the age of 3. The cumulative maturity curves are sigmoid, due to an overlapping of Gaussian curves. A logistic equation was developed to calculate the percentage of mature females at each length. There is no evidence that the present fishing levels reduce the chances of a female with developing ovaries to be fertilized, since 90 to 100% of such females bear spermatophores. |
